The Story
A few seconds before he moved.
This frame is the result of returning to the same stretch of shoreline week after week. The heron’s been there many mornings — sometimes facing the wrong way, sometimes too far out, sometimes gone before the light arrived.
On this morning the wind was still, the water held a soft purple from the sky overhead, and he stayed motionless long enough for the exposure to lock in. A few seconds later he stepped forward, broke the reflection, and the moment was over.
That’s the part of this work I keep coming back to — the photographs that exist because of the second you didn’t miss.
